Marion Design Co. was begun in the summer of 2016, myself and 17 others set up shop in an old bank to help the city of Marion, Indiana. The pro-bono social design work was commissioned by our mayor, who not only entrusted us with the bank, but with the project of re-envisioning the city we lived in. The large part of these four months was spent in just figuring out what that problem consisted of -- andwe wanted to learn and hear from every community member. We learned that Marion is home to a full and capable community that is misperceived, segmented, and under realized.
After our first two months were spent in research about our community, other communities like it, and everything else in between, we focused in on our targets. By dividing our team into three, we created task forces for the Downtown Revitalization, City Branding, and City Web Development. With my Creative Director, Herb Vincent Peterson, I was on the branding team, which was tasked with a difficult dilemma. How do you brand a city that is not ready for it? The result of that particular journey is under the City of Marion branding project.
